6 Days Marangu Route-Kilimanjaro Climbing Itinerary
$2630 Per Person
Overview
The Marangu Route 6 Days is one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, especially for those seeking a comfortable and straightforward trekking experience. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route” due to its relative ease and the availability of basic comforts along the way, it is the only route that offers dormitory-style hut accommodations instead of tents. This makes it a favorite for climbers who prefer sleeping indoors and having structured facilities at each overnight stop.
The journey begins at the Marangu Gate, winding through rich rainforest filled with birds and monkeys, up into scenic moorlands and open alpine desert landscapes. The 6-day version includes an important acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, which improves your body’s adaptation to the high altitude and significantly increases your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the roof of Africa.
Each night, you’ll stay in well-maintained mountain huts with bunk beds, solar-powered lighting, and shared dining halls. You’ll be accompanied by a professional team of certified guides, porters, and chefs who ensure your safety, comfort, and nourishment throughout the trek.
Though it is considered less physically demanding than camping routes like Machame or Lemosho, the Marangu Route’s rapid ascent profile still presents altitude challenges, making the 6-day itinerary a smarter, safer choice than the 5-day version.
This route is ideal for first-time climbers, families, or anyone looking for a classic Kilimanjaro experience with more comfort and less exposure to the elements.
Book your 6-day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro climb today and enjoy one of the most scenic and comfortable paths to the summit of Africa’s tallest mountain.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
The journey begins with a drive from Moshi to the Marangu Gate for registration formalities. The trek starts in a lush tropical rain forest, where you may spot blue monkeys among the canopy. The trail eventually widens into beautiful hillsides leading to the first camp.
Elevation: 6,046 ft to 8,858 ft
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Distance: 8 km | 5 miles
Habitat: Rain Forest
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
The day begins with a continued trek through the forest until the landscape opens up into high moorland. As the forest thins, you get your first clear views of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, two of the three volcanic cones that form the mountain.
Elevation: 8,858 ft to 12,205 ft
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Distance: 12 km | 7 miles
Habitat: Heath
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Mawenzi Ridge (Acclimatization)
This is a dedicated day for altitude acclimatization. You will hike up to Mawenzi Ridge, which offers motivating views of Kibo and the surrounding landscape. After spending time exploring and allowing your body to adjust to the thinner air, you descend back to Horombo Hut for the night.
Elevation: 12,205 ft to 14,400 ft and back
Hiking Time: 3-5 hours total
Distance: 10 km | 6 miles total
Habitat: Heath
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
The ascent continues gradually across the “Saddle,” a high-altitude lunar desert located between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. The vegetation disappears as you reach Kibo Hut at the base of the crater wall. An early dinner and rest are essential here to prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Elevation: 12,205 ft to 15,430 ft
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Distance: 10 km | 6 miles
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut (Summit Day)
Starting around midnight, you begin the most challenging part of the trek. You will ascend in darkness and extreme cold. You reach Gilman’s Point (18,600 ft) by dawn to witness a magnificent sunrise over Mawenzi Peak. From there, a final push leads to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, you begin the long descent back to Horombo Hut.
Elevation: 15,430 ft to 19,341 ft (and down to 12,205 ft)
Hiking Time: 11-15 hours
Distance: 22 km | 14 miles total
