6 Days Umbwe Route-Kilimanjaro Climbing Itinerary
$2287 Per Person
Overview
The 6 Days Umbwe Route is the shortest, steepest, and most challenging route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Designed for experienced trekkers and adventurous climbers, the Umbwe Route offers a thrilling and less crowded path to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. This route is known for its rapid ascent, dramatic ridges, dense rainforest, and breathtaking scenery, making it one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and rewarding trekking experiences.
Unlike the more popular routes, the Umbwe Route provides a true wilderness adventure with remote trails and fewer climbers on the mountain. The route approaches the summit from the south and later joins the Machame Route near Barranco Camp before continuing along the Southern Circuit to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. Although physically demanding, the Umbwe Route rewards climbers with spectacular landscapes, dramatic valleys, giant senecios, and unforgettable summit views.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Cave Bivouac Camp
- Elevation: 1,800m to 2,850m
- Distance: 11 km
- Hiking Time: 4–6 Hours
- Habitat: Rainforest
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a drive from Moshi to Umbwe Gate where registration formalities are completed before starting the climb. The trail enters dense rainforest filled with giant trees, moss-covered vegetation, and tropical wildlife. The route is steep from the beginning and follows a narrow ridge between deep valleys while offering occasional views of Kilimanjaro’s towering slopes. After several hours of trekking, you arrive at Cave Bivouac Camp for your first night on the mountain.
Day 2: Cave Bivouac Camp to Barranco Camp
- Elevation: 2,850m to 3,950m
- Distance: 6 km
- Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours
- Habitat: Moorland
The trek continues along a steep ridge as the rainforest gradually disappears and open moorland landscapes emerge. Giant lobelias and senecio plants dominate the scenery while dramatic valleys and cliffs surround the trail. Barranco Camp is considered one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful campsites due to its stunning location beneath the Barranco Wall and Southern Ice Fields.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
- Elevation: 3,950m to 4,200m
- Distance: 7 km
- Hiking Time: 3–5 Hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, climbers tackle the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the trek. This rocky scramble requires the use of hands in certain sections but rewards trekkers with breathtaking panoramic views once at the top. The trail then traverses valleys and ridges before descending slightly into Karanga Valley where camp is set for the night.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Elevation: 4,200m to 4,600m
- Distance: 6 km
- Hiking Time: 3–5 Hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s trek ascends steadily across rocky alpine desert terrain toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. Along the way, trekkers enjoy spectacular views of glaciers, volcanic formations, and the dramatic summit cone of Kibo Peak. After arriving at Barafu Camp, climbers rest, eat an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit ascent.

- Distance: 16 km
- Hiking Time: 10–14 Hours

Around midnight, climbers begin the challenging summit ascent toward Uhuru Peak. Trekking under the stars, the route climbs steeply toward Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. Reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise is an unforgettable achievement filled with breathtaking views and emotional celebration.
After taking photos at the summit, climbers descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down through alpine desert and rainforest landscapes to Mweka Camp for the final overnight stay on the mountain.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
- Elevation: 3,100m to 1,500m
- Distance: 10 km
- Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours
