Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 5 km | 3 miles
Habitat: Moorland
Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
This is a key acclimatization day. You ascend gradually toward Lava Tower, reaching a higher altitude before descending to Barranco Camp.
Although the ending elevation is similar to where you started, this “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to altitude. The landscape becomes more rugged and semi-desert-like.

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Distance: 10 km | 6 miles

You then descend into Karanga Valley and continue ascending toward Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. Early dinner and rest are essential as you prepare for the toughest part of the climb.
Elevation: 13,077 ft to 15,295 ft
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Distance: 8.5 km | 5 miles
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (Summit Preparation)
A shorter trek takes you fully to Barafu Camp, completing the southern circuit of the mountain. From here, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the summit from different angles.
You will rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt with an early dinner and briefing from your guides.
Elevation: 13,235 ft to 15,295 ft
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Distance: 3 km | 2 miles
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp (Summit Day)
Your summit attempt begins around midnight. This is the most physically and mentally demanding part of the trek.
You ascend through steep scree slopes toward the crater rim, reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise—the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, you descend to Barafu for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
Elevation: 15,295 ft to 19,341 ft (then down to 10,190 ft)
Hiking Time: 11–15 hours
Distance: 17 km | 11 miles
Habitat: Arctic
